Recent Chehalis Tutoring Session Notes

Tutoring review by Greg in Chehalis, WA
This week is the end of the quarter for the student, meaning all missing assignments need to be turned in. I reminded the student at our previous session to check in with his teacher to ensure everything was taken care of. I asked him to show me his online grading website to check on missing assignments. There are still 6 assignments listed as missing, which the student assures me have been turned in (just need to be graded and updated by his teacher). He has a quiz on Friday, which will be counted towards the following quarter. The content of the quiz included transformations of the parent functions y=x^2 and y=abs(x). So far, the class has only gone over reflections and translations (not stretching/shrinking yet). I introduced a new parent function to the student: y=1/x, so we now had 3 groups of functions to work with. We went over how to graphically perform each transformation, including stretching/shrinking, on the 3 parent functions. I also asked the student to write the equation that goes along with each transformation. After we finished this review, I made a list of practice problems for the student. I would give him the parent function and a verbal description of the transformation performed on them. He would then have to write the equation and graph it. He's very quick with the equations, but his graphing can sometimes be sloppy and haphazard. I asked these types of questions of him in various ways (gave him the graph and asked him to write the equation, gave him the equation and asked him to graph, grave him a set of coordinates and transformations performed and asked him for the final coordinates). He was adept at each task. The only area that he could stand to improve is his graphing. He is sloppy in drawing the graphs, but he claims that his teacher is understanding of this and only cares that they understand the concept. I tried to urge him to be more meticulous in graphing so as to not make it easy to lose points. Overall, I am confident that the student will do well on the quiz. I also think that by working some with stretching/shrinking and with other parent functions that Stefan is ahead of the curve in being prepared for the chapter test.

Tutoring review by Terry in Chehalis, WA
The student stayed well-engaged for the session today. We worked on "shapes in space" to identify (name) polygons and counting faces, edges, and vertices. Given that it is not so easy for a nine-year-old to interpret a two-dimensional drawing of a pentagonal pyramid as a three-dimensional figure, the student got the hang of this pretty well, but some actual three-dimensional practice would be a good idea. We may be able to do this via webcam. To help reinforce vertices, edges, and faces, we practiced drawing cubes and pyramids on the whiteboard and counted these. We practiced multiplication facts and then practiced elapsed time. Straight counting from hour to hour is no problem for her, but we should continue to practice time changes involving minutes and time word problems. She should practice multiplication facts to increase speed.

The student spent the first part of our session reading and studying biology to answer a question given to him for homework. He was able to schedule a retake of his unit 4 math exam. He had a study sheet to guide him. We did a couple of problems together, and I showed him a process for finding the info he needs, copying down definitions, illustrations, theorems and postulates used, and making notes to himself as to what is actually going on. He had several moments where things that were confusing before just clicked really well in his mind.

Tutoring review by Janiece in Chehalis, WA
The student worked on her homework today, which consisted of several word problems about unit rates. She had to solve problems involving miles per hour, dollars per hour, altitude, and cost per ounce, as well as filling in missing information in tables that represented proportions on larger and/or smaller scales. To be sure she understands that two fractions that may appear completely different are, in fact, the same, I showed her how to determine the value of each proportion (fraction) by simply remembering it is nothing more than a division problem. For example, are the proportions 4/8 and 3/6 equivalent? Yes, because 4 divided 8 is 0.5, and 3 divided by 6 is also 0.5, so they both have the same value. She seems to be understanding these concepts very well. I suggested she use a mnemonic device that will help her remember which is which.
