This week marks the first session of our new schedule (Monday and Wednesday 3:30-5:30PM).  The student and I covered both Algebra II and Chemistry topics today.  She has a quiz on Tuesday (9/13), so the majority of the Algebra II tutoring was spent reviewing topics that would be on this quiz.  The student felt confident with many of the topics that we had been covering in previous sessions, so the review covered mostly new material.  The material covered was:  finding the slope when given various initial information (two coordinate points, the slope of a line and one coordinate point, etc), finding the equations for two parallel lines, finding the equations for perpendicular lines, and direct variation.  These topics were reviewed by doing problems.  For chemistry review, we went over dimensional analysis again for her upcoming quiz (9/13).  We also reviewed density, the three different states of matter, and kinetic and potential energy.

Spent this session  working on writing.  We looked through some sample essay questions and talked about how to approach them.  We talked through what separates each grade point and about examples that he could use in the essays as well as the importance of analysis and keeping time.  He seems to grasp what he needs to do. We will have to see if he can execute these things.  At the end of the session we spent 10 minutes going over some vocabulary.    The student  is starting to get the hang of using context clues to find definitions.  Lastly, I left  him with two pieces of homework to do, besides learning vocabulary, one reading passage and one writing passage.

The student and I reviewed one the last assigned activities for her first accounting course. She did a great job working through a lengthy activity. The first question involved the recording of 8 adjusting entries, and she performed well. There were only two small entry corrections, and the adjusted trial balance was still in balance. I provided assistance as she worked through the closing entries and also the inventory accounting portion (involving cost of goods sold available for sale, sales, and the application of FIFO, LIFO, and average cost). We also worked through a series of entries involving notes receivables/payables, accrued interest, and payoffs. I briefly reviewed several additional areas (e.g. depreciation methods), and she felt comfortable that she was on the right track with a significant portion of this activity such that she would still receive a good grade in the course overall.
