Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We started the session by clarifying a few concepts the student was confused about in chemistry. We walked through how to approach titration calculation problems and practiced a few. We also discussed acid and base nomenclature including the differences between "-ous" and "-ic" suffixes and how they each relate to the molecular structure. This involved a brief introduction to resonance structures and how they effect the stability and commonness of a particular molecule. We spent the rest of the session focusing on algebra. Her algebra class has continued to go more in depth with sine and cosine functions. She and I worked on problems that included graphing a given function as well as writing an equation to describe a given graph. We wrote out the basic form of y=A(sin/cos)P(x+-T)+-S to represent where one could easily find the amplitude, period, sinusoidal axis, and transformation/translation. She seemed quite confident about both graphing and writing equations. She did fumble a little bit with determining how to best represent a period change within an equation. With a bit more practice, she should be perfectly comfortable with this in no time. She showed she had the concept of period changes down pat and knew where to find them within an equation."
"Wednesday the student and I worked on some statistics. He did pretty well with designing experiments. We finished his worksheet, and then went on to work on some of the physics homework he had. He has been doing really well, and even received an A on his last math test."
"This was my first session with the student and I felt that the session went well. We went over a few chapters from this math book dealing with volumes, surface area, and lateral area of prisms. This included cylinders, triangles, rectangles and cubes. He seemed to understand this material for the most part. He is planning on doing a few worksheets over the weekend and coming to me with any questions he has on the material."
"We went over 10.1-10.3. We were working with square roots and exponential expressions. We also covered evaluating and estimating square roots. Good job as usual."
"The student had some review practice quizzes to complete in preparation for his final exam next week. There were problems on multiplying rational expressions, solving quadratics using the quadratic formula, graphing quadratics, finding the max and min of a quadratic function, and exponential growth. He did well on all of it and is well focused on working hard to prepare for his final!"
"In my final session with the student, we worked on her Chapter 7 test review - her final math test as a high school student. She's made great progress in the last two years and it was great working with her!"
