Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In this session with the student, we tackled math. Since the end of the term is coming up and there will be a test, we decided to go over the old assignments, to brush-up on the old concepts. I randomly assigned her problems from her previous assignments and we went over them. As always, I left her with detailed notes and step-by-step instructions to go over in her spare time."
"We reviewed chi-square testing, as well as testing for proportions. The student had a basic understanding for proportion testing, but didn't know the difference between that and chi-square testing. I showed him the difference between testing actual proportion and testing the distribution of data. I continued with the hotel scenario to better explain the purpose of chi-square and how it is implemented. After a quick explanation, he had no worries. We then went over a couple of practice questions concerning proportions. The student just needed help identifying variables and concepts included in the formulas presented. He quickly picked up the material and was able to answer most questions attempted without much assistance."
"The student and I covered a lot in this last session. We went over some of her labs she is doing in physics and answered any questions we could. Then we went over algebra 2 and geometry type questions as well as word problems and basic algebra. She will be taking her act soon so we wanted to cover all our bases for math. We started with the hardest type of questions and then progressively got less complex. I gave the student a great website for her test that has 5 sections with 10 to 13 questions each. We went through set 5 and 4 and I told her to do sets 1,2,3 on her own."
"During our session we went over mean, mode and median, both with a list of values and a graph. The student knows this subject pretty well. I will give him more examples to work on next time we meet before moving on to a new topic."
"Today we reviewed a test that the student got back. She did worse than we'd like and seemed to struggle with negative numbers and graphing specifically. I showed her some tips and tricks to help make these problem types easier, then had her do several practice problems. She is a quick learner."
"Today we worked through his homework problems on trig identities for continued practice. I also looked ahead to the next session regarding trig sum and difference formulas, and we will work more with problems on this topic next session. His test was pushed back by his teacher, so we will continue to review homework problems next session in preparation for the upcoming test."
