Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Julia in Zion, IL
The student and I worked together on his English and history coursework this evening, and began by reading a chapter from his history textbook together on the Islamic Empire of antiquity. We discussed meaningful points in the chapter, including the Battle of Tours, and made notes together for his potential in-class quiz. Next, we read book 10 in The Odyssey, and spent some time working through the text together until the events therein made sense to him. As previously, I was really pleased with his general attitude and obvious intelligence. He seemed to really enjoy the story within The Odyssey, once we began to talk about it in a way that helped boil down the action a little bit for him. I also found that he recently received an A+ on his poetry submissions for English, with encouragement to submit to the school publication, which was highly encouraging (and had clearly bolstered his enthusiasm as well).

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Andre in Zion, IL
Today we mostly talked about an upcoming grammar test for English. I worked through the provided study guides with the student and gave him some tips about identifying parts of speech, especially tricky prepositions and how adverbs relate to other parts of speech. He was on point with everything, and I think he'll do great on the test. He just needs to remember to use some of the strategies we talked about (if you can't conjugate a word that's difficult to identify, it's probably a preposition, etc.). We also went over a comprehension assignment for history dealing with the Renaissance/Scientific Revolution. Because of my familiarity with the subject and philosophy in general I was able to give him some extra context and strategies to deal with dense philosophical texts.

Tonight we worked on the student's French lesson and correcting her English test. She got a 5 out of 10 on her last English test and was given the opportunity to redo it for a higher grade. We went over her answers and corrected them so she could turn them in. We also talked about reading the questions all the way through.

The student is working on complementary and supplementary angles in math, as well as ratios. We completed 2 days of homework assignments in math. She struggled more with the ratios, but with examples she was able to finish the work with little trouble.

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Tami in Zion, IL
The student is learning the concept of area of composite shapes. At the beginning of the session she was really confused and apprehensive of about the subject. She was unsure about which steps on first and why the steps are done in that order. We started the session by talking about how this concept is used in everyday life. And I had her brainstorm fun ways she might use the concept to spark her creativity. We then reviewed the initial example given in the worksheet. As we went through the example, we talked about why each step was done in that particular order. By the end of the worksheet she was able to do the worksheet with no assistance from me. She even had a thoughtful answer for the challenge question. I'm very proud of her.
