Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We reviewed what she learned this semester, focusing on estimating angles and working with fractions. She had remembered with very few hints."
"The student worked on multiplying 2 and 3 digit decimals. When he takes the time to write neatly and organizes the written operation, he nearly always arrives at the correct answer. I recommend using grid-lined paper in order to help the student line up the equation to avoid simple mathematical errors."
"I met with both students again this week and we're back to our weekly visits after the holiday. I started with the first student this week, who had a big final project on transformations that he was mostly done with by the time I got there. I looked over what he had done and watched him as he finished the work but he really did not have much trouble. I was happy to see that he had the transformation rules memorized so applying transformations was really easy for him. He also has a midterm coming up, so we started to go over all the material we have gone through so far. He seemed really comfortable with the basics, so next week I want to challenge him to really reinforce the concepts. The second student did not have any math homework and the material she is working on now (multiplying mixed numbers) is more basic than her previous unit so I wanted to continue going over that. Sometime all it takes is a useful diagram or heuristic to really make something difficult click. Every week we go over the relationships among percentages, fractions and decimals and she seems to get it but has trouble remembering it. Sometimes a simple triangle illustrating the relationships among the three representations really helps. I tried this with the second student, and I really think she started to understand the simple relationships especially as I had her work through problems to reinforce the "triangle." I'm excited to see how much she remembers when I see her again next week."
"During our session, the student and I completed a worksheet review assignment that will help her prepare for an upcoming quiz in class. This assignment covered linear equations - how to graph linear equations using the slope intercept formula, how to construct a linear equation when given sets of points that fall on a linear line, and how to solve for the slope of a linear equation. The student did very well in today's session. We will meet again next week."
"We did more on Taylor polynomials. That seems to be the student's main area of difficulty. We worked on generating them, integrating them, and derivatives of them."
"The student was very excited today because she received her exam back and got a 100%. She had a C before, but after this exam, her grade is now a B+. Today in class, we reviewed a lot of the concepts from the semester, including mean, median, mode, box and whisker plots, GCF, LCM, and common denominators. The only concept she struggled with was GCF, but after some practice, she could solve the problems well. I believe she's now well versed on all the topics covered this semester in class so far, so she's on a good track for her final exam!"
