Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student is showing great improvements (especially in the critical reading and writing sections)! She seems ready to take the test in three weeks. Today we went over the math questions I assigned her that were tailored to concepts she had difficulty with. We also went through the practice test she took and identified concepts that she can work on additionally (inverse proportions, algebraic questions). She and I worked through the problems using the explanations provided by the SAT blue book's online study guide. We also went through the writing and critical reading questions."
"From the student's diagnostic tests, I noticed that he struggles with Geometry and Coordinates, and so today was devoted entirely to those concepts. I was surprised however, by how fast he figured out problems once a key insight was explained to him. He is actually very adept at arithmetic and algebra; his main issue is that he rushes. To try and help, I left him with a practice SAT math section, but told him not to time himself. I want him to get a feel for what 25 minutes actually feels like so he won't be as hasty. Once he gets over this, I believe his math score will improve dramatically, as he is quick to master the necessary concepts."
"Today, we covered the writing and critical reading sections, particularly strategies needed to succeed on the multiple choice sections. Specifically, for the writing portions, we discussed sounding the sentences out in context to help determine their accuracy as well as strategies for choice elimination and time management. I have noticed that flash cards have helped the student be more confident with unfamiliar vocabulary, and she has gotten much better with interpreting context clues to vocabulary answers. I would like to cover reading passages over the next few sessions as well as review concepts previously covered."
