Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This was the student's and my first session together, so we concentrated on evaluating his strengths and weaknesses. He has spent a good deal of time with his school in test prep, so we need to take a slightly different approach. We looked over some math problems he had problems with, and I asked him to complete an ACT diagnostic test before next time."
"We continued our work on the SAT multiple-choice writing section this week. We have almost completed all ten practice tests in this area, so we decided that next week we will work on reading to save some of the writing material. The student is getting perfect sometimes and missing one or two per passage other times. He is really benefiting from having rules that he can name for each question. The questions he has needed help on are more related to common sayings, such as "far from" instead of "far away from." We worked on identifying rules for these answers. I have been reminding him that every section we complete gives us a bigger arsenal of phrases and caveats to standard rules, which all together make him more prepared for the test."
"I began the session by answering questions the student had about some of the problems he had done for review. We then moved on to word problems. We emphasized being able to translate the sentences in word problems into equations, keeping in mind a few key words, e.g. means equals, two thirds of means (2/3)x, etc. We then moved on to some review of participles and participial phrases with a focus on correcting dangling and misplaced participles. We finished the session with some review of critical reading and sentence completions."
