Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we covered, Critical Points and the First Derivative Test. The student was very willing to learn and interested in the material. He understood the calculus pretty well. I included strategies to help determine values for different trig functions."
"We covered the properties of integrals, Riemann sums, summation formulas and properties. The student is very energetic and shows great interest in the subject. No extra work was left, the student indicated that she would do more practice problems from the book. The student was finding it a bit difficult to apply some properties of the definite integral, the definition of Riemann sums and some summation formulas. I suggested to her to solving some problems are best aided by first looking at graphs as they might suggest ideas how to go about solving the problem."
"The student and I worked on limits. We learned about slope and instantaneous velocity. We then discussed limits, functions, and infinities. We computed several limits algebraically by factoring, expanding, using conjugates, and end behavior. We will continue studying limits next time."
"During this session the student worked through his online Calculus homework. Much of the material was review for him, but I explained thoroughly any topic he seemed to be cloudy on. In particular, during the first half of the session, we worked through problems related to lines. We discussed the point slope formula, the slope intersect formula, the standard form of a line and how to calculate slope. We also graphed lines. Also covered was defining the domain and range of functions, as well as the various notations for representing these sets. We then moved on to quadratic functions. We discussed how to factor, and how to complete the square. I gave a derivation of the quadratic formula and demonstrated some of the relevant uses. I suggested that he practice the process of completing the square, due to its usefulness in graphing parabolas and in the derivation of the quadratic formula. He was very energetic and excited to be getting work done during the session."
"We covered geometry problems that involved finding areas of shapes and volumes of objects. Overall, the student did very well and seemed to understand all topics we discussed. He did, however, have trouble finding the volume of air inside a box filled with golf balls. I simply explained that we need to find the volume of the golf balls and subtract it from the volume of the entire box. He did the problem easily after that."
"Today, the student and I covered some review problems for his upcoming test that is covering Chapter 6. He, as always, had a great attitude during tutoring, which makes going over the material much easier. Tomorrow, we will review more in depth implicit differentiation and finding the tangent lines, which should take care of the last two difficulties he is having in chapter 6."
