"Considering we are ahead on the student's class material, it seemed like an opportune moment to have a "catch up" session to look over concepts that she was unsure about. In this session's case, we looked over resonance structures. The benefit of having this "catch up" session was immediately noticeable as she had considerable progress with resonance structures. The only thing that she still struggles with slightly is that she does not know what to do when faced with dead ends. In that case, I offered her some advice and suggested she look back at her first structures and identify other opportunities to branch off and create other structures. Speed and efficiency will come with practice, which is why I also left her with the remaining resonance problems that we were unable to finish during the session."
"We reviewed reactions and mechanisms, looking primarily at peroxides, Wittigs, and reagents related to the Wolff-Kishner reduction. We also discussed more general concepts, such as what makes protons acidic and how anions are stabilized. The goal for the next session is to have this information organized, so that it can be used to figure out multi-step syntheses for more complex organic compounds."
