"The student and I reviewed all the problems in her review packet. She is much more confident in her ability to approach problems. I am confident that she will do well on the exam. We worked hard tonight and I explained several key concepts that she was not sure of. Overall the lesson went great!"
"The student at first struggled with the homework, but refocused herself and was able to complete the 4 questions correctly with very little prompting. We then continued with a more complex problem involving the product rule and implicit differentiation. Again, the student had no problem completing an example question. We then did differentiation with respect to a different variable time (t) which is not a variable of the function being differentiated. Again, the student got this and so we did some practical problems using this concept (related rates). We did the classic sliding ladder, inflating balloon and objects moving apart in different directions. I gave the student a homework problem of a sliding ladder from the textbook. I'll be testing the student on several topics we've covered in Calculus the week after next to consolidate and assess her learning for her ability to enter a formal calculus class and understand what is being presented."
"We went over the student's first section of calculus, which was on linear functions. We also talked about the topics on the rest of his syllabus. He seems serious about learning the material, so he will probably do well in the class."
"The student and I covered section 6.1 and 6.2 in preparation for her quiz tomorrow. We did indefinite and definite integrals in addition to addressing other calculus problems. We solved initial value problems using first and second derivative as well as plotted slope feelings. She seems to understand the material very well."
"We went over translating a graph (square root of x, x^2, etc.) with manipulations of the equation. The student is struggling to understand all of the concepts of the section, however, he had a great attitude towards the material. We talked about test taking strategies and questions he should review. I left him questions to review. He got a grade back in chemistry that was unfortunately around a 50%. Most of the points he lost were on memorization (and six were on the same exact mis-memorized fact). We talked about it and then moved on to calculus."
"I met with the student for an upcoming quiz. She wanted some clarification on arc lengths, so we went over how to construct and derive the arc length formula in Cartesian and polar coordinates. We did a few practice problems for each method, and I helped explain the process and the application of these methods. She seemed especially receptive to the analogies I made to link this new knowledge to ones she has mastered in the past. She seemed very happy with this session."
