Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This was the student's and my last session together, so we split our time between a general strategy review and the vocab section of Critical reading. The student is so bright, and I expect her to do very well on her test."
"Today, we covered the remainder of algebra in SAT math, practicing fractions, percentages, and integers. The student was a lot more comfortable with word problems today, which we practiced a lot of, and in general seems to be grasping math concepts well. I offered her some conversion tips, and formulas for ratio problems and combinations. I asked her to go through and practice geometry in her SAT prep book before our next session. We also continued to practice critical reading, and I gave her harder questions this time. She found some of the harder words challenging, but I helped her work through questions and identify what some unfamiliar words meant, as well as giving her a link to an online SAT vocabulary list. I asked her to practice more passage-based questions in her own time."
"The student took the SAT on 2/7 and is taking it again on March 14. We discussed his test-taking experience, especially his approach for the essay. He appears to have used the strategies we developed about planning/outlining the essay and incorporating strong examples, and he followed the essay format we'd practiced. We then reviewed a practice essay he had prepared: strong intro and conclusion, but one of the examples did not really address the prompt, and neither example was sufficiently developed with specifics. We spent the last hour on vocabulary building exercises. For an assignment, he is to continue developing his bank of examples using our list of promotional themes as a guide"
