Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
" Previous to this session I sent a few videos about reactions to the student and she reviewed them, asking a few questions. Today the student and I reviewed decomposition and combustion reactions, some from her recent quiz and some from problems I provided. First we reviewed the 5 major rules/approaches to decomposition problems, and did practice problems until the student felt comfortable. Then we reviewed combustion and balanced several equations. Molecules were drawn out to demonstrate what charge they are and the periodic table was used as a reference to show how elements get the common charges they have. The student picked up these approaches very quickly, and was doing both types of problems with confidence by the end."
"We covered how to balance equations and write net ionic equations. He understood it pretty well and was able to do the example problems. Overall, this was a great session."
"The student and I had our first session Wednesday evening. We went over some problems that focused on using the gas law equations. She is very good at making sure all the numbers are in the correct units, however, she was struggling a bit with rearranging the equation and inputting the equation into her calculator properly. She is a determined student, and I think now, after our session, that she will be much more prepared for her upcoming test on these equations."
"Today the student and I covered molecular formulas, polyatomic ions, and naming of compounds. She got the hang of the naming once I showed her how to manipulate charges on different atoms. I gave her some tips on reading the periodic table and getting clues from it as well."
"During our time together, the student and I worked hard at completing her chemistry homework, covering calculations of molarity and other aspects of solubility. By the end of the session together, she had a very clear understanding of the material and felt prepared for her test coming up soon. Additionally, she had a quiz recently that she was happy the way she scored. I also will send her a follow up email with videos and practice problems to reinforce this information. All this to say, the session was very productive and I sincerely look forward to working with her moving into the future."
"We went over types of reactions, as well as how to balance and recognize them. More specifically, we reviewed single and double replacement reactions, synthesis, decomposition, and combustion reactions."
"Today we covered stoichiometry. We practiced converting between moles and grams, determining theoretical yields and limiting reactants. The student readily grasped the material after we ran through a few practice problems. She is clearly intelligent. We reviewed her work on one of her lab exercises, where she was able to determine the limiting reactant with minimal prompting."
"We reviewed gas laws again. We went back over the things we did last week, since the student hasn't had her exam yet. She was much more comfortable with the material this session. She was able to identify which gas laws to use and when. We also went over some simplification of exponents for her math class."
"Completed homework assignments for chemistry and biology classes. The biology homework dealt with RNA and DNA- what they are made of, their function, etc. chemistry homework was a worksheet on stoichiometry. With both assignments he showed thorough understanding of the material and had no problem completing the worksheets."
"The student achieved a 100% on her last test! She has been working extremely hard during our sessions and it is definitely starting to show. In tonight's session, we covered more chemistry material covering calorimetry. She can do well on her upcoming test if she stays focused on the task at hand."
"Today we went over the student's last quiz, which was on the beginnings of stoichiometry and using volume in molar calculations. We also worked on her lab, which focused on the practical applications of stoichiometry/ limiting reagents/ dimensional analysis. Overall she is really understanding the material. Her quiz showed that she did understand the concepts. She's still struggling a bit with test taking skills, like carefully reading the problem and understanding what it's asking for. I'll prepare a mock test to get her back into the chemistry stride and also to focus on test taking skills specifically. Otherwise, no concerns from this session!"
"Continued to work on solubility, solutions, concentrations, and dilutions. Finished Solubility Curve WS and WS_Molarity3."
