Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"After a general discussion of school and a review of recently completed assignments, we chose to concentrate on some outstanding homework. The student finished her latest current event assignment for Health, then began on a Biology worksheet. She followed the strategy of first filling in the answers she knew, or could quickly look up, and coming back later to the ones that required more thought. She worked fast and efficiently and stayed focused on the task, even when she had to look up details online. I was also impressed to see that she'd proactively asked her Biology teacher to explain the terminology of mitosis that had been confusing her and had made a neat diagram to help her remember. We concluded by discussing an upcoming assignment she has to write on the dangers of technology. She's made good progress with research and organizing her ideas, turning the relatively open brief into a specific look at three areas where technology may impact negatively on our lives. I offered some suggestions of things to think about when critically analyzing sources."
"We worked on algebra, discussed the student's study skills and worked on his history homework. We also spent time speaking about how he likes to learn and brainstormed over ideas to make studying more fun. By the end of the session, he and I had started developing a great rapport. Additionally he had completed his history homework and we had worked out a study program where he will alert me of upcoming homework prior to his sessions."
"Worked on the student's weekly vocabulary, and went over the second student's history unit. Also worked on some AIMS prep with the second student."
"Today the student started working on his End of Course exam packets. We focused on him completing his Biology packet and then made a game plan for preparing for the rest of the exams."
"I suggested that the student illustrate her notes, so that each page of notes looks different from the others. I'm hoping that attaching the information to a visual cue will help her recall where the information was in her notes. After we had this conversation, the student and I studied for her math test. We reviewed box and whisker graphs."
"We completed the history worksheet. We went over English vocabulary and Spanish vocabulary for upcoming tests, then did drills and exercises of various kinds. The student felt very ready for all three tests."
"Today we discussed how to organize for studying in geography and math. For Geography, I recommended the student that she meet with her teacher to make sure she knows what areas will be covered in the test. For both subjects, I recommended that she set aside 3 half hour blocks this coming week to practice Math or study geography. Next, I helped her understand her current homework and we started going over graphing equations. Next week, we will work on organizing for Biology and Spanish."
"Using textbook as a resource, I showed the student the factoring trinomials practice I wanted her to do. She worked on that and then I showed her a word problem strategy, and gave her some multiple choice guided practice."
"The student and I went over test-taking strategies for her AP tests. I also helped her review several topics from AP English on satire."
"I assisted with English, Latin, and math homework for Wednesday night. Progress was made, and the student completed an extra credit assignment in Latin."
"The student and I studied for her final exam in her Education class. Though she still needs to study more, she did well on the concepts that we discussed."
"Great session! The student was focused and motivated today. We studied for her math exam Monday and her English exam next Wednesday."
