Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today the student and I worked on reading comprehension and writing. She used context clues to find her answers and was able to get about half of them correct. She also wrote an essay that was multiple paragraphs long- which is a huge improvement! I'm very happy that she is doing better in writing."
"We covered reading comprehension, sentence formation, and essay structure. The student struggled with everything equally, but she has a wonderful attitude -- she is a hard worker, and wants to succeed. I did teach her a trick regarding comma placement and encouraged her to proof read her work out loud. This helped her catch mistakes and question whether her ideas were clearly stated. I saw a rubric, and she told me what her teacher said about one of her essays."
"The student and I got organized for a busy week ahead. He is going to try and join a group in his marketing class after all, which is very encouraging. Not only will this lighten the workload for him, it will teach him how to work with a creative team. He has a big English assignment due this week that we spent a part of today organizing for. Because the assignment requires reading journals from the library, we will have to finish that assignment tomorrow night when I'm on campus. Tomorrow night we are going to put in an extra hour to ensure he does not fall behind on this week's work."
"The student and I reviewed a homework assignment from her reading class. It consisted of reading stories and answering the questions correctly. Additionally, we there were vocabulary in context questions as well as True or False ones."
"Student worked hard on the revision of her Dracula paper. She struggles the most with letting herself just write freely and trusting herself to revise later. We're focusing on producing the writing, in rough draft, to be polished later."
"We reviewed the latest section of the student's class to prepare for her test next week. The section mostly covers L'Hopital's rule and indefinite integrals. We worked through the review packet, which included some difficult problems, and she did great."
"In this session we worked on topics in geometry. We covered three sections; two of the sections were review from last session (sine, cosine, tangent), and the third section was an application of the trigonometric functions to word problems. The student was a lot more confident this session with these topics after our work together last session. After a brief review, he was able to solve most of the problems by himself with minimal help."
"We worked on Dolch sight words for first grade and then read a book that the student checked out from school. We read part of a book about the Tooth Fairy that I brought. Finally we played hangman online to work on word building skills."
"After meeting the student and her mother today, they brought me up to speed about where she was currently in her math class. She is in Algebra, and currently working on systems of linear equations. We reviewed how to solve these types of questions by using the substitution method, and we did many practice problems. I also taught her the other way to solve such problems, elimination, and we practiced a set of problems using this method as well. She said she thinks they are going to cover solving via elimination in class next week, so we worked ahead a little and got her prepared in advance."
"The student mentioned he had an upcoming quiz on imperfect vs preterite. We reviewed the common irregular verbs in the preterite and practiced irregular verbs in both forms. He has a firm grasp on when to use either form and on conjugating regular verbs. We discussed which irregular verbs he should focus on studying for his test."
"I met with the student and her mother on Thursday for an introductory session. She and I reviewed the 2nd grade Math books and workbooks. I then prepared her books for our next session."
"We quickly went over some stuff involving interpreting charts and graphs, then moved onto entry-level statistics. I spent a good bit of time explaining a lot of general groundwork stuff about stats and how it works, and then we did some problems."
