Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We went over PR physics (electromagnetism and circuits) as well as PR biology (endocrine system). During this session, I decided to concentrate heavily on physics because she was having trouble understanding how to interpret electric/magnetic fields and using the correct equation in each of the problems. She had an easier time with circuits."
"We worked through in detail a practice passage to review kinematics and to focus on MCAT strategy. Covered center of mass, torque, and center of gravity."
"Reviewed concepts in light, optics, and principles of liquids. Completed practice problems in light and optics. Completed practice problems on Bernoulli's equation."
"For this session, we focused on the Physical Sciences and covered electrostatics, circuits, and magnetism. The student will also be taking a practice test this weekend that we will be going over next week."
"We went over the practice test that the student completed this week and also set a biological and physical sciences review schedule for the next 5 weeks before his MCAT test date."
"Discussed various MCAT topics in physics and biology including Magnetism, Cardiology, Cell Metabolism, TCA cycle, Glycolysis, Homeostasis, etc."
"Reviewed in detail the endocrine and nervous system as per the student's request. Discussed concepts and answered practice questions."
"We reviewed a full length exam, went over test taking tips and strategies for the student's Friday exam."
"The student and I had our final session today. We covered metabolism, immunity, a bit of organic chem (anomeric reactions, open chain glucose and glucopyranose), enzymes, and hormones."
"We covered basic mental math techniques, including long division, exponentials, logs, and converting fractions to decimals. We also went over some physics topics: gravitational force, centripetal force, and torque."
"Today we covered the biological sciences section, focusing in on the molecular biology portion. The student's homework for this session was to study (read and practice problems) the following sections of biological sciences: biochemistry, molecular biology, and cellular biology, as well as take a practice exam. For our session we planned on going over the problem areas that she had with those sections. Based on the assessment of her homework assignment, we focused our session mainly on biochemistry. We spent the first hour going over enzyme kinetics and the second hour on cellular respiration. We plan to go over the verbal section next week."
"The student and I began our session by going over her previous performances on the MCAT and her current goal. We discussed what strategies and test preparation materials she has used in the past as well as her attitude towards the various sections of the exam. She identified really wanting to bring up her score in each section by 2-3 points and hoping to obtain a 30 on her next exam date. After discussing her plans for studying and reviewing we decided to begin our session by going over a verbal section. We began by reviewing the several key strategies for the verbal section. I prompted her to always scroll to the bottom of the passage and look at the author and title information since that can give you some clue about the topic of the passage. We also discussed working through each passage in search of the main idea and reviewed some strategies on how to do so when a passage is especially challenging (i.e. topic sentences and putting it in your own words). I reviewed how important it is to never "zone out" and how putting each paragraph into your own words can increase your comprehension and retention of the passage's main idea. We also discussed the strategy of identifying extreme answers that are incorrect through their strong phrasing as well as the "2 sentence above and below" rule for taking a quote in context. Overall, she seemed motivated and was able to use these strategies during our session to obtain 4/6, 4/7 and 4/6 on three passages."
