Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We started with the writing portion since this is the student's most challenging area and it requires the most independent thought. I showed her a PPT that addressed hooks and conclusions. We then took the 3 persuasive essays she wrote and began revising them, starting with the hooks and doing what we could in the conclusions. The last 30 minutes of the session, we read a story and answered questions related to it. I stopped her at various places in the reading to gauge her comprehension and was impressed with her level of understanding. I left her with homework to choose 2 of her 3 essays and come up with 3 supporting ideas for each to support her position using the internet to research stats, stories, and quotes to support her ideas."
"We reviewed the student's scores from the SAT she took in January. We will review the in depth material next week when she receives her full score report. We decided to start studying for the ACT in April to see if she will do better with that test since it is more math oriented and has simpler vocabulary. We went over the structure of the ACT, reviewed ACT strategies and did some practice problems online. I assigned her some practice problems to complete in the test prep site over the week and also sent her a link to an amazon book she can purchase so that we can begin studying full time next week."
"In today's session, we began by going over the math problems from the practice exam she had worked on last week. I explained each problem that she had missed and had her work out some of them on her own. After I pointed out strategies for multi-step problems, she saw that she knew most of the math required to find the answer but had been bogged down by the wording/symbols used in the questions. I will continue working with her on the math section next week, in addition to vocabulary. For homework, she said she would take a full-length, timed practice test. This will allow me to see where she is at and make adjustments over the next three weeks before the exam. She has said she is noticing the patterns/concepts that I have been pointing out as she works through the problems and is feeling more confident about the exam."
