Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I reviewed in preparation for her upcoming test. Topics covered included exponential and logarithmic functions and their applications."
"The student asked her teacher to postpone her topic 7 math test so that she could be more prepared, so that is what we focused on today. We reviewed each section (each topic consists of several sections), and I asked her to do the hardest problems over again, also completing some of the problems we had skipped the first time around. She had forgotten how to do a few different things, like dividing by a decimal (that was the most challenging section yesterday), so we went over it again. She caught on much more quickly this time than yesterday. We also spent more time on the last section, which is cumulative (synthesizes topic 7 with past topics) and which involves multiple-step word problems. I asked her to explain why she completed each step the way she did - she stumbled a few times, but was able to find her way to the correct answer with prompting. We ended up spending all of our time on topic 7, rather than moving on to the next lesson (which was an option), and now I believe she has a more solid knowledge of division and decimals."
"Today we went over the student's homework, which reviewed hypothesis testing and probability. She had some trouble figuring out how to solve some of the problems, but we worked it out. For the AP next week, I highly recommended she go through the practice tests to review the topics she was less familiar with."
"In this session, I helped the student with preparation for her test covering probability chapter. We worked on all the problems at the end of the chapter. First, she solved problems from different sections. I went over to the related section and explained it with examples until she understood better and able to solve the problem. She then worked with permutation/combination/counting problems, and we spent time reviewing the materials and doing extra practice problems. Finally, she worked on multiple-choice probability questions, for which we then discussed the answers. She is getting a better grasp of math concepts and improving her problem-solving skills. Our session overall was productive and went well."
"Today, the student and I went over his first two tests from this semester. We completely went through the first one and got about half way through the second. He is going to finish going over the 2nd test this week. We worked on tweaking a few approaches to problems so he could attain the maximum points possible."
"The student is really getting probability! We went through most of her homework problems and had her practice teaching me how to do the problems. She is going to teach her grandmother how to find probability of independent and dependent events in preparation for her test on Friday, and I am going to find some practice problems for her to do in the mean time. She gets the concepts. She sometimes rushes to an answer which is incorrect but if I prompt her by asking "IS that the answer...?" She very quickly knows that it was incorrect and what the correct answer is. Teaching the concepts not only is giving her more confidence in her own answers, it also gives her more confidence in herself and her abilities! I look forward to hearing how her quiz went when I see her again on Saturday."
