Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student had a real breakthrough. I taught her how to identify and label the TYPE of question each question is (vocabulary, main idea, inference, function) so that the student would know how to answer the question, and know what was being asked of her. The biggest help, however, was coming over the types of traps found in the answer choices (distortion, or if scope, misuse of information, etc.). This really helped to keep the student from rationalizing every choice into a possibility. It removed the grey area."
"We went through some practice SAT questions. The student recently took the exam and he feels like it went well. We are continuing to work on questions he struggles with. These are mainly questions dealing with percents, combinations or permutations, and geometry."
"Today we continued our review of the critical reading diagnostic test. Using the unknown vocabulary from the previous session, we wrote sentences and stories to help the student internalize the words. When we went over the questions again, he was able to answer more than half correctly thanks to his new vocabulary. Then we moved on to reading comprehension. We went over some questions together step-by-step so that he could get a feel for the process of elimination method. And for homework I assigned him to read 3 New York Times articles online, which I will quiz him on during the next session."
