Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We discussed the nature of the assessment test and relevant strategies. We discussed strategies for learning vocabulary and hints for preparing for the essay. We discussed an overview of the quantitative section and the four different question types. The student will work on the study plan I created for her until our next meeting."
"The student and I focused on reading comprehension, working on several passages and questions. We identified his weaker areas within the section and talked about some strategies for tackling them. Additionally, we worked on a writing prompt, developing a strong thesis statement and supporting details. He was assigned some work in the science section."
"Individual breakout sessions (2 hrs. each) with "reverse tutoring" of 3 sections from practice test (2 critical reading/1 writing for Student 1, 1 of CR, 1 math, 1 writing for Student 2); assigned HW of one practice section for Sunday"
"The student and I worked on preparing for her test on Friday. We reviewed the definitions of an extensive list of vocabulary words describing people and their personalities. We also reviewed a recent homework assignment which used these words. Finally, we completed some exercises on conjugating irregular verbs in the present tense, reviewing in both written and oral form. I believe that with additional study of the words she will do well on the test. Also, she reported to me that she is getting and "A" in her Spanish class, which is further evidence of her knowledge of Spanish and her improvement."
"The two students both had science and math tests to study for. We went over both subjects. Science was over basic physics and I tried to help them come up with ways of remembering Newton's laws and the relationship between acceleration and velocity. Math was on probability again, which wasn't too hard to discuss because they both had been taught it by me before."
"Final study prep for English. Reviewed characters in Witch of Blackbird Pond, reviewed literary devices, studied grammar, parts of speech, sentence structure, subordinate and independent clauses, direct and indirect objects."
"Went over her previous quizzes and reviewed concepts she had difficulty with: types of sentences, diagramming sentences, identifying and classifying prepositional phrases, direct and indirect objects, objective complements. Good progress, I think."
"The student is making progress with the math portion of the SAT, but we still have a ways to go. I am encouraging her to be more independent on the problems, using me for guidance but relying on her own knowledge and problem-solving skills to evaluate the problems. I think this way she'll be more capable of doing similar problems in the future on her own."
"The student got her test back from last week, and she didn't complete the test due to time. We discussed changing our tutoring strategy a bit, and moved on to homework five. I provided a short lesson, and worked through all problems to get the correct answer so she can attempt them on her own. This homework is on factoring, and it does seem to make sense to her. (It is a review for most of the class, so nothing is done very in-depth in class.) We will meet again on Friday morning."
"The student and I covered science briefly (phase changes). We then spent the bulk of our session covering Math, in particular special triangles. We went over the rules of 30-60-90 triangles as well as 45-45-90 triangles, and discussed how to find side lengths, perimeters, and triangle areas."
"In the last session with the student, we covered AC and DC circuits. We went into MCAT physics concepts involving resistivity, capacitance, and several more concepts relating to electrical current. During the session, the student went over some discrete questions to reinforce these concepts. We also did some physics passages with high yield questions. He successfully completed all the questions and learned a few shortcuts that will allow him to save time on the MCAT. He will be implementing these strategies on his next full length practice exam this weekend."
"We went over a math practice test she did and then moved onto some word problems that I found. She seems to be getting more consistent in math, so we moved onto science. Most of her mistakes in science are time related. She will do another practice test for homework."
