"Today we worked on test taking strategies for math. I also gave her some problems to do for algebra and strategies to do those problems easily."
"We reviewed multistep equations and scientific notation from last week. We then covered the Pythagorean theorem and its application, as well as how to approach word problems."
"We spent most of the session going over how to graph simple linear equations. He has just started at a new school, and we went over a new strategy of graphing equations that he was introduced to but did not understand. He lacks confidence - for the first few problems he was having trouble solving equations with basic algebra, and we had to review order of operations. Once he had completed a few problems successfully though, he seemed more comfortable. He seems to be lacking a lot of the knowledge for where his math class is right now. There is a lot of foundational work he needs to do such as mastering basic algebra before he can even start on parabolic equations. We spent the end of the session going over his science homework. He seems to have a good grasp on the material, and I don't think that will be a big concern going forward. Next time we will be going over his English work so I can understand where his skill level is and what the class expectations are."
"We covered graphing radical functions, using properties of logarithms, and finding the discriminant. We began by covering the discriminant, which the student already had down really well. After she saw a discriminant problem handling a variable, she was able to solve any problem involving discriminant that I gave her. Next we moved on to graphing radical functions, which she could also do very well by the end of the session. Finally we moved onto the properties of logarithms which we spent the most time on. She was able to walk me through log problems and tell me what to do in order for us to solve the problems. She is now a log solving pro, and by the end of the session could solve any I threw at her. I showed her some strategies to problems that she understood and used them to solve her problems."
"We worked on "testing a claim" using tests and confidence intervals. The student brought two problems that he got in class and I provided some out of a textbook. He knows the concepts and the formulas, but with any math, reviewing the formulas before a test is necessary. We will meet on Monday before his test."
"This evening the student worked on examples from a homework assignment on scatter plot, correlation, and line of best fit. Progress was definitely made today. I was able to help him make some connections on formulating equations for the line of best fit. We will continue discussing it next time."
