Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We went over the practice problems I gave the student for homework. A lot of his difficulties were in the harder trig questions which he hasn't covered in class, and some of the trickier geometry questions. I've assigned him a full, timed practice test to do as homework before our next session, and will be checking in on him later this week."
"We started with a review of what we had done last session. Last session we focused on grammar concepts using the learning tools on the test prep site. This week, we started with a review of the SAT essay scoring guidelines and I had the student write an essay using a prompt from the January administration of the test. She did very well-we noted using more examples or evidence and improving transitions between sentences as some areas for improvement. She is familiar with writing argumentative essays which will translate well to the SAT essay for many of the prompts. We went over some example essays with scores of 6, 5, and 4. These gave us some more things to work on and a couple ways to open up the format of the essays she may write. Then we used a couple of practice tests to work on some grammatical concepts-punctuation and improving paragraphs."
"The student and I covered some critical reading strategy, and some math section strategy. On CR we talked about analyzing a passage to find the main idea, the purpose, and the structure. We also talked about the correct answer being the one with the best support from the text. We can use the structure of the passage to help us figure out where to look to answer questions. On the math, we looked at a section on finding patterns in problems. We also looked at analyzing problems, basically figuring out how to simplify math problems, and working from the known information to find out what's next, like finding angles and sides in a geometric figure. We're working on some SAT Vocab as well. Before Thursday, she will have taken a diagnostic exam, so I will know what to focus on most in the time we have left."
