"In this session we focused on the reading section this week. First I went over the format of the test and told him to consider which of the four passages is his weakest so he can figure out which passage to do last on test day. We also went over common traps, such as the answer choices including phrasing from the texts but meaning something different, the relationship in the answer choice being opposite of that in the passage, answers that sound nice but weren't mentioned, and answers that are too extreme. Then he and I worked on a timed reading strategy to get through the passages. He is going to read just the first half of each paragraph the first time through to get the general idea and save time. Then, while looking at the questions he should try to determine which paragraph the answer will be located in and search for key words from the question in that paragraph to find the answer. He tried two reading passages by himself at the end of the session. He did a good job with the reading strategy to finish on time, and understood the general idea of the passages."
"Today, our primary focus was math. The student is strong in many concept areas, but struggles with some concepts like percentages, which we will continue to focus on. In addition, we will work on decoding the format of the ACT and developing strategies to help when she is stuck."
"Worked with the student on the science section this evening. His biggest challenge so far has been time, so we focused on places where he can make that time up, properly dividing his time between passage and questions, and strategic skipping to maximize his score."
