Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I spent the majority of today's session going over the math section of the SAT. Because this is her first experience with the test, I focused on showing her that most SAT math problems are word problems, and that it's vital to closely read and analyze the problems in order to figure out what is being asked. I think this was helpful, but it's something that we will need to consistently reinforce."
"The student took his vocabulary test, and then we went over the union/intersection/inverse math concept to explain a math diagnostic test question he wanted to review. We then went over his diagnostic test #3, taken under no time restriction to measure his accuracy. It improved a little from his last test score. He appears to have a good understanding and answer most questions correctly the first time. We reviewed the test partially and will pick it up next week, but I asked his answers and identify any concepts he felt we needed to review further (i.e., definition, the passage's purpose/tone/etc.). I also assigned him more college entrance exam vocabulary words."
"For the first session, I mostly wanted to see what the student's general problem solving strategies were and how he approached the test, so we did a lot of practice problems together. His best section for the ACT is science, so I want to work on applying what he does well in that section to the other sections, especially the reading. We spent a lot of our time on math, because I needed a gauge of what concepts he knew and didn't know. I think he can solve a lot of his test taking problems by writing the problems out on paper and avoiding small mistakes. I will be emailing him some math problems to work on for next week, so we can work on some of the concepts he doesn't understand (specifically trigonometry- Pythagorean theorem and sin, cosine, tangent). I really enjoyed meeting him, and I look forward to making a lot of progress with him over the next couple of months. He definitely has the potential to do well on this test."
