Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Between the 8/30 session and this session, the student took an entire practice test! She graded it and we went through the correct answers. I explained some things she needed to go over and put together resources for her to look at in an email. Some things we covered today including when to use "me" vs. "myself," using "between," and using "than" + a verb."
"We reviewed basic SAT strategy to help minimize stress and anxiety and maximize efficiency and improvements in results as well as homework problems from the Numbers & Operations packet. We began covering Sentence Completion strategies and I assigned one hour's worth of work in the SC packet for review on Thursday."
"We went over SAT math and she became very confident with the distributive property and with FOIL. I left her with some math problems to do before our session tonight in order to ensure that she can keep being successful on the problems without me talking her through them. Tonight we'll focus more on the reading section. I also have suggested doing vocabulary flashcards and she is going to talk to her teacher about ways to learn the words quickly."
"In this session, we discussed our timeline from now until test day for when the student should take practice tests. I also reminded him to write down vocab words he encounters and record them in his vocab journal. We worked through a sentence completion practice section together and identified words he struggles with. He has been granted extended break time and small group accommodations for his test day, and so he will take his practice tests in that format. He will be taking the free SAT test this Saturday in a timed fashion. I also sent him practice sentence completion and correction passages so he can complete one each day from now until our next meeting."
"I started the session by talking to the student and learning a little about him. What his interests are and what he sees for himself in the future. Then he told me about his previous SAT test prep and showed me the scores he received on previous SAT exams. I decided that we should primarily focus on improving his SAT writing and math sections. I then had him complete a timed 25 minute writing section. We then went over the answers, during which I explained several grammar concepts that are repeatedly found on the SAT. I left him with some homework; he must complete another section of "spotting sentence errors" on SAT practice test #7 and label the questions with the concepts they are testing."
"Today we reviewed the results of the student's latest practice test. She is now breaking 500's in the Math and Critical Reading sections whereas previously, her scores were below 500 in both. Her writing scores have improved, too, up from 530 on the previous test. The plan is for her to complete practice test sections before our next session. No concerns to report."
"Student A has set a high goal for herself on her next SAT, and student B wants to see improvement also. I worked individually with each observing them assess questions from a critical reading and math sections. Student A takes her time trying to understand the content; we need to work on increasing vocabulary and test strategies. And Student B's thought process as she worked through each problem was excellent; she needs to work on minor strategies and practice taking the test more. I think both girls could easily improve their scores. I gave them some assignments that are going to target improving their CR performance. Will meet with them again Sunday."
"We went over the homework during this session. I allowed her time during our session to do some of it so that we could review application of concepts from the previous sessions. We also went over writing and essay strategies."
"Today was the first session. We covered the verbal section of the SAT. He is the average student. SAT scores ranging from 420-510 per subject. The student was given homework--a practice test to do by next session. He is a nice kid and I'm looking forward to working with him."
"We went over the student's last SAT scores, discussed her goal for the next test, and looked at the colleges she wants to get into. Then we agreed on a plan of action together. In the second hour, we started working on SAT geometry problems."
"The student and I finished correcting her practice test, and it's clear that grammar rules and math are where she struggles most. We reviewed her critical reading exercises and she is making tangible progress, which is great. We continued our math review through arithmetic into algebra, and assigned a few exercises for next time. I also asked her to review common problems in grammar usage and do some in-depth self-assessment so we can make the most of our review."
"We spent this study session finishing up one of the practice tests he had done pieces of already. We began with 2-passage reading comp passages, then worked on some math and vocab questions, and finally ended with a few grammar questions to finish the session off. Although he still needs help with some of the questions in each of those categories, overall he is coming along well. His homework is to do all the things from last week, including answering the questions from a couple of long reading comprehension sections that we had skipped over during this tutoring session, and of course to write another essay."
