Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today, we focused on Reading Strategies for the SAT. I also gave the student a brief test on math to see where she is at. Her assignment before our next meeting will consist of essay and vocabulary words. Once she gets the materials, we will begin work in the book. She still needs to do a diagnostic exam."
"We began with going over her goals for the assessment and our tutoring sessions as well as her previous scores. We started with Science today and she took a diagnostic test so from there we looked as the specific types of questions she needed to cover and discussed strategies to make answering those easier. She will be doing a Science section in the Real assessment book before our session next week."
"The student and I went over some more math problems from the test she had taken. Greatest Common Factors, some geometry and the Pythagorean theorem came up often. Then we took some time for the student to take a reading practice test and she did fine."
"The student has greatly improved her math and writing scores since our last 2 sessions. We will meet again Sunday at 10 AM to go over the other sections, but today we focused on many math questions."
"The student told me about her previous experiences with tutoring and the assessment. We looked at questions on a test she had completed and walked through the answers. She continued to work on these questions while I explained concepts to her that she wanted extra help. I put together resources for her that I sent her in an email. We discussed sentence correction including parallelism and phrasing (ex: "just....so..."), punctuation (specifically semicolons), and vocabulary definitions. The student said she liked this format."
"The student and I looked through her Common Ap. I showed her how to add schools and access supplements so she could figure out what additional writing she had to do. Next, we worked on vocab. We sorted her vocab flash cards by roots, so she got down a lot of prefixes like comp-, ex-, ab-, div-, de-, etc. She plans to continue sorting her vocab flashcards and make a quizlet to study roots. This will give her more tools to remember new words and to work through additional vocabulary. Finally we worked through a critical reading set. We talked a lot about main idea questions vs. detail questions and close reading to find the answer that best fits the question."
"The student and I met for a session of assessment tutoring. In this session we mainly worked on the algebra concepts that would be covered in the test. The student was able to pick up these concepts with relative ease. We also did some coverage in grammar and I made sure to assign her an essay for homework. Overall she is making good progress."
"We went over each section, but focused mainly on Math. The student was struggling the most with Science passages (reading the passage and understanding) and geometry. No concerns from this session."
"We went through various passages in all four of the subjects in the ACT test. It seems that the student does better when we switch topics between the sections. She was more responsive and did better on the sections in this way. I gave her some practice passages to go over before our next session in reading and science."
"The student was very well prepared and enthusiastic about today's session. The countdown to the actual ACT test date begins. The focus of the session was math -- consisting of math quizzes, broken down into sections, and worked aloud. I noticed that the student was working through math problems at a faster rate than previous weeks. In addition, she is getting more problems correct! She definitely notices an improvement in herself and shows her excitement through a shining confidence. She used to give up immediately when coming to a math problem that she did not know how to approach; however, this is no longer the case. She tries harder to think of ways to solve the problem, and pushes herself."
"Today the student and I finished the last section from her practice test and started to work through more practice sections. We did a long paired passage and she practiced answering questions as she read. She is getting better with this technique and is getting more reading comprehension questions correct while improving her pace. She still needs to work on pacing and needs to omit more reading/writing questions rather than guess and/or rush."
"We reviewed part of Practice Test 3, and went through a number of SPR questions from the front of the book. I assigned the student to complete the rest of Practice Test 3, including the essay, for Thursday."
