Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I worked on the Reading and Science sections. She has greatly improved her ability to do both of these sections. She has become an active reader and is doing very well with comprehension. She understands how to effectively answer science questions, too. She has improved in her ability to interpret data."
"We covered strategies for SAT reading section today. We went over passages as well. I also gave the student a brief math exam to see where she was. She still needs to take the practice exam, and get the materials I suggested. For Wednesday, we will go over her essay, vocabulary words, and passages assigned."
"My session with The students was pretty similar to my first student's session. We started out by discussing word roots and prefixes using the prep book, then spent most of the time in Practice Test 6 of the SAT book. Both boys worked diligently, and about equally well. They seem to both have good vocabulary, so it was pretty simple to teach them the word roots when I used it in a word. Both boys did well in the practice test, when we mostly covered critical reading and some writing; No math in this session."
"Today's first session with the student was mostly about familiarity with the SAT and problem types, but we still did lots of actual problems, including an entire math section. She has a solid foundation in math and grammar, but needs more help identifying commonly asked concepts on the SAT. We discussed strategies for sentence completions, including filling in the blank with your own words and eliminating answer choices that don't fit. In math, we covered lots of different problems, including circumference problems and functions. Finally, we covered a few concepts in grammar such as comma splices and basic parallelism. For next time I assigned her to complete Sections 4, 5, and 6 in the practice SAT. Overall she is off to a great start."
"Today the student and I worked on SAT Mathematics. I had her take a diagnostic practice mathematics test and we spent most of the session going over her answers. She is a smart student! We also focused on logarithms and logarithmic rules; I gave her a practice worksheet and we reviewed some problems from that. I ended the session by assigning her some practice exercises from the Mathematics workbook."
"The student and I reviewed the tips and tricks for the Critical Reading and Writing sections, as well as went through the Math portion of a test to better identify the types of issues she has with Math problems and addressing them. She will finish a practice SAT, essay included, by our next Saturday session."
"We worked on a critical reading section of the assessment. Since I am her Verbal tutor, we will continue working on this type of thing as well as the Essay section this week."
"The student and I discussed coordinate covalent bonds today in the context of polyatomic ions. We also previewed stoichiometry by taking brief notes and doing practice questions, and for next time we will continue this method."
"We went over her reading homework and reviewed comma, semicolon and colon rules. After going over these rules, the student really seemed to get it and said she felt very comfortable with the subject. We then began working on Science and did a diagnostic test and then began working through some questions together. We are meeting again on Thursday and for homework she is going to do a practice science section in the Real assessment test."
"Personal introductions. Reviewed past test scores and recent diagnostic test scores and detailed analysis report. Discussed plans, overall goals, and sections of greatest strengths/weaknesses. Gave practice/diagnostic questions using Passage-Based Reading walk-through/explanation section in the study guide. Went through each question and passage in detail, especially focused on strategy and reasoning used to arrive at each answer. Assigned the student to read over the complete study guide section in order to review and also to see ideas and tips I might have missed. Section includes more practice questions at the end. Next session, will review these last practice questions, review things learned by reading, and move into the Sentence Completion and maybe the Writing sections."
"Today we started by going over the math homework I had assigned. We reviewed the concepts as we went over the questions and it will help to do the additional practice tonight. We also continued working on some science passages together."
"Today we reviewed a critical reading section on a practice assessment and the student did very well on this. I spent some of the session becoming familiarized with the student's progress so far. We discussed a few grammar topics, including parallel sentence structure and pronoun agreement. The student also completed a multiple choice writing test and for next time, the student will continue to review vocabulary, and review the Essay section in the assessment before taking a full length practice exam over the weekend."
