Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We reviewed the homework problems. The student was able to do most of the homework correctly, and I helped with the problems he missed. We went over triangle classification and definition. He had some difficulty with naming angles after learning the new material so I selected problems for him to work on before next session that help with that. He did the homework problems and we went over them together. He is learning the new material well. I gave him a "test" that he will take before we see each other next. We then previewed chapter 2 and discussed in detail what a mathematical statement is."
"Today we went over the perpendicular bisector theorem as well as the angle bisector theorem in order to review for the student's test tomorrow. There was a great deal of material to cover, but he was very focused and did a great job. Overall, he is very committed to making note cards and study aids to help him remember formulas and theorems. We also went over the properties of midsegments and 30-60-90 and 45-45-90 triangles. Overall, he had more material than usual to go over, but none of it seemed to difficult for him to master."
"The student completed chapter 5, Parallelograms, today. He had improved his knowledge of the different characteristics of each shape from Wednesday. I gave him a review packet of everything we have covered so far. This will help him to stay sharp as well as giving him extra practice since we have moved very quickly."
"Today we covered geometry. We will continue to focus on geometry next week as well. We finished the practice quizzes from chapter 3 today, and she got 9/10 questions correct. We then moved on to chapter 4 and were able to cover 5 sections today. We went through the theorems, postulates, vocabulary, proofs, and examples together. I have left some problems from the book for her to work on so hopefully she will have those finished by tomorrow and we can move on into the next sections."
"The student did very well on the homework I assigned him. During this session, I taught him triangle properties and conjectures, including congruency shortcuts. I started to introduce proofs to him as well, and assigned him some elementary proofs to complete for the next session."
"Since we didn't have homework over the weekend I spent the day teaching the student our next lesson. At the beginning I reviewed the work over circles that we did on Friday, and I was very happy with the ease of his answers. We then started our lessons on angles."
"Went over distance formula and angles formed from intersecting lines. The student had little trouble with the material. With the exception of a few typos, breezed through the problems presented. Assigned her some lessons on online math site."
"Today the student and I discussed right triangle trigonometry. We specifically discussed the tangent ratio and solving problems using this idea. We prepared for her chapter test and quiz which will be tomorrow."
"The student and I covered chords in the circle unit. We also talked about expectations regarding completion of assignment between sessions. I gave her my email address to use if she finds herself stuck in between sessions. I also gave her two resources that she could use in between sessions. Using screen share, I showed her how to access and use the search function within these two resources. The student and I agreed that by tomorrow, she will have completed the assignments left in the circle unit."
"Today we went over geometry 101; Lines/planes, parallel and perpendicular, volume, surface area of 3D shapes, and Euler's F+V=E+2 formula. We went over some practice questions as well. No problems to work on, but we summarized our session on paper, including formulas. He is to look over it briefly before our next visit."
"The student has never taken geometry before, and she needs a quick review of the main ideas before beginning her honors math class in the fall. I am going through the geometry section of a Math subject test with her to review the main sections. Today we covered exercise geometry and coordinate geometry. She did quite well with these two sections, and we will continue to go through the rest tomorrow."
"The student and I worked on trigonometric ratios and she was able to quickly understand the concepts. We then shifted our focused to special right triangles where she seemed to struggle a bit to understand. By the end of the session, I explained the concept a few ways and she was able to understand and accurately solve the problems."
