Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The girls had to reschedule their session because of a holiday, they weren't in the normal part of their schedule. Student 1 had a test she did poorly on, so we spent a lot of time going back over those formulas, and really making sure she had those in her head properly. Student 2 also had test corrections to work through, but she also didn't get her extended time and I think that affected her a lot. She knows this material well."
"During this session, the student and I went over her class notes and then she worked on her homework for the night. She is working on exponent rules in class, and she is doing well with the material. She did not need much of my help on the work."
"The student has an Algebra midterm on Thursday, so we started by solving problems from a study guide that her teacher handed out. She has some past quizzes and worksheets that she got back and I will use those to make a problem set for her to work on tomorrow."
"We covered the distance formula, coordinate systems, drawing and recognizing graphs, finding the equation and slope of a line given two points, point-slope form, standard form, slope-intercept form, and the Pythagorean theorem. The student is starting to grasp the underlying concepts of algebra quicker than when we first started. I believe he is a quick learner who should have no problems mastering algebra."
"The student wanted to go over problems evaluating logarithms, as well as problems that use logarithms to solve for variables. In doing this, we went over the various logarithm rules. She was able to solve most of the problems with minimal assistance. Overall, I believe she now understands how to solve these problems for her test next week."
"Today, the student and I completed some science homework and completed a math section of a practice admission test. The science homework was a writing assignment about kodiak bears, and he needed to come up with evidence for the appearance of kodiak bears and where they might have evolved from. After we discussed ideas for his science homework, we began a practice test. He did really well on it, only missing one or two problems. Otherwise, his critical thinking skills, test taking skills, and reasoning skills are all great. I think he will do well on the test when he takes it. For future sessions, we will practice sections from old admissions tests to get him geared and prepared for standardized testing in his immediate and extended future. The session went well. He has online access to practice admission tests, and a test book with two practice tests in it as extra practice between sessions."
"In this session we completed a worksheet dealing with completing the square. We reviewed methods for completing the square that were covered in the last session and the best methods to set up the equations. We also covered how to solve equations using the quadratic formula."
"We started the session with a 10 minute discussion on time management. We formulated a long-term plan for our interaction: we'll start each session by planning his next few days, and manage his tasks on his app of choice. He seemed very excited by the more thoughtful approach to his time, and the possibility of spending less of it on homework. We then finished his math homework. I asked him to finish his Spanish within 30 minutes of my departure, and I can see on the app that he did."
"The student is continuing to review for her upcoming quiz. She was given a review assignment which asked her to transition between point-slope, slope-intercept, and standard forms, as well as know how to find parallel and perpendicular lines. She has gotten pretty good at putting lines in slope-intercept form, but still forgets some of the requirements for standard form. She also has some trouble remembering how to find the slope of a perpendicular line. Overall, she has improved quite a bit though."
"On this day, the student and I worked on one of her Algebra assignments in preparation for the assessment test coming up. The goal was achieved completely and she had a great handle on the material. I will resume with her early next week. Overall the session was great and she did very well."
"We reviewed the student's algebra homework since he had missed that class yesterday. It involved graphing quadratic equations. He definitely got it. Then we worked on his essay from last week, which was in pretty good shape!"
"We covered radical expressions, simplifying radicals, factoring, and reviewed simplifying expressions of this type. She was able to complete her homework with few questions, and work through additional problems in the chapter for practice. She is confident that she is prepared for her exam next week."
