Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Algebra 1 review - made a list of review questions from CH. 1-4, we reviewed these together, he did well overall. Reviewed polynomial expressions and rules for exponents. Still some problems with: slope-intercept and graphing lines from equations, subtracting vs. dividing to simplify expressions. He is doing much better overall, scoring a 88 on his most recent test (up from something like 35 previously)."
"Worked some more on Of Mice and Men. The student is having real trouble with the vocabulary in this book, and that seems to be impeding his reading comprehension. I asked him what happened in the second chapter, which he had already read, and he didn't really know, so I decided we should reread the chapter. I had him read aloud to me and every time he mispronounced a word I corrected him and asked him if he knew what it meant. If he didn't, I had him write it down along with a definition. He wound up with a list of over twenty words. I also had him make a list of characters and add information about them as he found it, and had him draw pictures of the interior of the ranch hands' bunkhouse to test his reading comprehension and keep him engaged. When the lesson ended I told him to keep reading the book as we had- to define the words and take careful notes. He seemed relieved to have a method for reading the book. We got a lot done today, I think we made some good breakthroughs!"
"Topics: Determined what the student needs to focus on in Math, and practiced it -- all word problems, number theory, geometry-based word problems, combinations, some data analysis. Progress: This session was very productive. We identified some areas where real progress can be made, and I could tell that I was offering noticeable help. He was more communicative, as well. I am looking forward to the next session."
"We reviewed the student's two exam scores. I had him complete practice science portion of the exam. We reviewed his English section of last exam taken (punctuation pointers; seeing yourself as editor looking for best selection; focus on subject-verb agreement and complete thoughts, etc.). We also reviewed practice science test and went over approaches to outlining for writing portion."
"The student's exam today is on optimization and related rates problems. We went over examples of each and I tried to simplify the approach to each as a systematic process. I went over these again at the end of the session as a generic overview to prepare her for the test. We also spent a significant portion of the time going over some homework problems from the start of the chapter that she had been unable to complete on her own. Most these involved graphs of the derivative or second derivative so we reviewed the applications of these."
"We went over 1:1 correspondence games and grouping games. The student has a really good grasp on logic games and is able to see patterns and rules very nicely. She should work on recognizing and understanding sufficient and necessary conditions."
