Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today was our first tutoring session. We began by reading the introductory material in the test-prep book and talking about general test-taking strategies. Then we decided to begin with the math section, since the student thinks it will be one of the most challenging sections. We worked through some of the practice problems; He didn't remember all of the formulas, but he did fairly well in general. Over the next week, he will complete one of the practice tests included in the book. When we meet next week, we will review the practice test and identify more specific areas of focus. We only met for one hour today, but our next sessions will be an hour and a half."
"Today the student and I prepared for her upcoming chemistry test over chemical nomenclature. We discussed the periodic table and how we can determine the number of valence electrons from it. We then reasoned whether elements were more likely to lose or gain electrons based on the octet rule. Afterward we used all of that information to help us name compounds. She has a better understanding of the material than she did previously. I advised her to make flash cards for all of the poly atomic ions and memorize their formulas and charges and go through her test review again."
"The student and I had a great session today. We worked on his spelling homework for half the session, writing down definitions and the number of syllables for the words on his spelling list. We then read a few pages in his book and jotted down some questions for his reading homework. We ended the session with a game of hangman, again using any words that he had spelled incorrectly in his homework. At the end of the session he found the words he'd misspelled and corrected the errors. I think this is a really great strategy for helping him with spelling and he seems to enjoy it very much. He was well focused today and did a very nice job overall."
"Today we covered physics for 1 hour (Forces, rotational motion, Potential/Kinetic energy). We also covered calculus for 1 hour. We reviewed graph interpretation, solids by rotation (disk and washer), and related rates."
"Today the student and I finished her SAT prep. She's doing much better than she was on day one. I've worked with her to get her to focus more and I think it's paying off."
"We spent most of the time working on her computer science. We worked on pre-quizzes to prepare for the quiz at the end of the assignment and to get it to open. I also helped her to understand the English assignment and we set up her account for Math."
