Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I had our first session. It went well. He's a sharp student who is homeschooled and is considering going to one of the public or private schools in the city. My sense is that we should do a few sessions together and if he needs more we can assess but he should focus on getting familiar with the logic and reading comprehension sections, as well as learning math formulas and test taking strategies. He also needs some vocab practice to bolster his knowledge."
"The student and I first reviewed the verbal placement exam section she completed since our previous meeting to go over some of the more challenging questions. We then worked on her social studies homework, which included reading and translating excerpts from Thomas Paine's "Common Sense." We then worked on her lab report for science, focusing in particular on writing and answering key questions clearly and thoroughly. We focused on how to develop a complete "sources of error" section of the report that explains how errors might affect the lab's results. We discussed the exam prep that she is going to do before our next meeting, which includes two more timed sections, developing a vocabulary list and creating some type of system (such as flashcards) to begin reviewing vocabulary words regularly."
"Today, we completed his Social Studies assignment. We read through the handout and completed the worksheet. The questions will make a good review for his next exam. We also discussed his Science Lab. He had completed most if the sections at school. We drafted a complete conclusion to show his understanding of the lab."
"The student and I prepared for his respiratory exam this coming Friday. We went through the entire section and retook notes, breaking down each piece of information, using ways to make each term memorable and understandable. By the end of the session, he knew the entire system backwards and forwards and all the related materials about disease and the effects of smoking. I told him to repeat this process multiple times until Friday and I think, if the instructions are followed, he will excel on the exam."
"The student and I reviewed his Economics homework. He did very well on this, and was very alert and enthusiastic about his classwork. His grasp of the Economics concepts and material is very good, and he has pleasantly surprised me with his work. We also did a brief review of history too. He and I talked about accountability for upcoming Astronomy and Computer science work, and he told me he is on schedule. We will meet again next week, maybe Tuesday or Wednesday as he has tests later on in the week."
"The students worked on Math; rounding numbers, and math fluency. For Reading they worked on reading a passage and answering comprehension questions. They worked on listing action words or verbs and attaching adverbs to them. For Writing, Student 1 edited her home journal writing."
