Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we reviewed some calculus and statistics problems. Then we covered implicit differentiation. I left the student with some practice problems."
"The student and I practiced definite and indefinite integration today, incorporating trig integrals and u-substitution into his repertoire. He struggled to understand how substitution worked at first, but after two or three examples, everything seemed to fall into place for him."
"The student and I focused on a graphical approach to calculus. Using a general graph of a continuous function, we drew the graphs for the first and second derivative identifying points of interest and what they mean using simple algebra concepts. We then went over related rates, doing one as an example, and then having the student lead an example of her own."
"The student and I went over some online homework of his. It mostly covered taking the derivative of various compositions of functions. Once I laid out the correct process to use, he was able to execute it properly. We then talked about how to get more comfortable picking the process to use."
"We met for the first time today. We talked about min/max problems in general, and I provided a few hypothetical examples and then we worked on several problems that the student had for homework. I stressed the process of finding critical values and making sure to check those along with the endpoints to find the min/max values. We used the graphing calculator online to see how our solutions present themselves graphically. We found critical values by taking the first derivative and setting it equal to zero and solving for x."
"We worked on the determination of rates of change using derivatives. This involved using the chain rule to find the rate of change in area and volume in terms of d/dt."
