Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We went over chapter 1 of the work book. Each child completed chapter 1 with no problem. They worked hard on simplifying expressions, combining like terms, and factoring."
"Reviewed most recent chapter on log functions and exponents and assigned problems to practice before our next session on Monday."
"We covered simplifying and factoring quadratic equations. Our next session will be next Sunday, 4-5:30pm, as usual."
"This was my first session tutoring the student, and my first chance to get to see what her grasp of the material was, given that she was nervous and wanted to get tutoring. The current material was graphing, factoring quadratic equations, and completing the square. She does well on the material when walked through it, she just sometimes second guesses herself away from the correct answer. I spent time going through her areas of confusion, particularly in certain situations of graphing, and especially word problems. Word problems are a sticking point for many students, and is no different for her. I have just helped to reinforce that one must break the problem into smaller chunks, and work with what is known, then find the endpoint of the problem, so that one can solve the pathway to get the answer. We worked through a couple of word problems, and she was surprised at how simple they could be. I believe that it is a confidence issue as much as anything. She will do great with more practice."
"Today we worked on the next two sections of her textbook. She did very well on these subjects. The first covered stem and leaf plot and histograms. These were new strategies for dealing with older topics in statistics. Because they were on a topic she does very well in, this came very easy to her. The second section covered dividing polynomials. This is a long task because you have to use long division. The only difficult part is keeping track of all the units. It's easy to have errors if you miss a step. Other than these two subjects, we went through a few of the homework problems that she had an issue with. After going through them, she understood her mistakes."
"Today, we covered topics which included solving linear equations using graphing, elimination and substitution methods. We covered all these methods with examples from the school assignments the student had. We applied these techniques in solving the word problems on the assignment. Lastly, we found solution of the two functions which were linear and quadratic by graphing. In the coming sessions, we will prepare for the End of the Course exam."
