"We covered the critical reading section of the SAT. From the diagnostic test the student took, it is clear to me that his primary area of focus should be building his vocabulary. Once he knows enough of the words in a given question, he can recognize what kinds of words should fill the gaps. He understands contrast and cause and effect; he just needs the tools to be able to use that understanding. So during this session, I noted every word he didn't know. I instructed him to use them in sentences of his own devising, to help him remember. We went over more than 40 new words and tried to incorporate his personal interests into the vocabulary, to help him better remember. For homework, I told him to focus on internalizing the new vocabulary from the diagnostic test."
"We walked through the beginning math concepts of the SAT guidebook. The student primarily needed help with exponent rules. The student was engaged and interested in learning how to tackle the math problems far more so than earlier this week. We worked on learning individual concepts and then applying those concepts piece by piece to complex problems, as well as looking for shortcuts. Her homework is to read pages 247-332 on the remaining math concepts we didn't cover, as well as to create and run vocab."
"The student and I went through a geometry practice session. He got 30/40 correct with coaching. I will give him a post-test during the next session to ensure he retained the knowledge and strategies."
