Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I worked from the SAT practice test. We worked a few problems from the beginning and middle of a Math section and reviewed triangles and substitution strategies in particular. We also worked through vocabulary questions, a short passage comparison, and a medium length passage, going over questions he missed and discussing strategies to maximize reading efficiency and accuracy. We also went over a few sentence improvement grammar questions and he wrote a brief essay outline on a sample prompt that I gave him feedback on."
"With two sessions remaining until the 2/6 ACT, we planned this meeting to revisit the Math section and ensure that the student is as prepared for the variety of questions as possible. We worked through one entire sample section in guided practice to maximize the student's exposure to ACT-style word problems. While some problems required more guidance to find a solution than others, I was pleased to see her taking more initiative and demonstrating positive growth as she became more familiar with the way the material was presented. Our next goal was to get her comfortable with the time limit, which had been an issue in our initial section survey. We conducted time trials to model proper rhythm and pacing while maintaining accuracy. We made definite progress by the end of the two hours, but agreed that we would prepare even more if time allowed the following day."
"We began by looking over the assignment I gave the student last week. Her ability to write clearly and succinctly has definitely improved. Her points were much easier to grasp. Afterwards, we read through an introductory paragraph of one of her essays, which also showed much more clarity. We took a short interlude in which we reviewed geometry and trigonometry concepts. At the end, I had her writing descriptive essays about the same thing but with different themes. Her attitude was engaged and hardworking. I asked her to take SAT quizzes regularly. I also asked her to design a small writing assignment that she and I would both do."
