Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today was my first session with the student. I got to know more about him, as an individual and a student, as well as more about his strengths and weaknesses with the core subjects. I introduced him to the format of the test (the number of sections, questions and times), as well as the scoring system utilized for the ACT. We then went through a sample passage of each section, where he did 15 questions by himself. We then scored them and went over the incorrect ones, as I introduced some key patterns and methods that are used on the test. I wanted him to do this without any previous exposure to help serve as a base line which he will improve from. He seemed particularly strong in the sciences and showed a better understanding in English once we went over some key patterns. I've assigned several passages in each section for him to complete before our next session. I'm very confident that he will do great in the upcoming months to prepare for his test!"
"We began by going over the students' performance on independent practice (sample Science section). A couple answers needed clarification, but overall neither student displayed any problems understanding the necessary skills or making patterns of error. We then returned to the English section for a topical review in anticipation of the 2/6 test. Practiced identifying errors in grammatical voice, subject-verb agreement, verb tense, and pronoun use before adjourning. Neither student showed any consistent difficulty with a specific topic, but the reliability of their answers is still below where we'd like it during the test. We will be working on that. We also discussed grammar mechanics and how to recognize specific question types to build familiarity; will resume here on 2/5."
"The student and I finished building his math study sheet. We did a few math problems, mainly about equations of lines and simplifying expressions. Then, we worked on two science passages. He will do a practice science passage and sign up for the ACT before our next session on Monday."
