Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The session focused on preparation for an upcoming pre-calculus quiz this week. First, we went over the test from last week that was just handed back. Most errors that the student made on the test pertained to solving or simplifying exponential and logarithmic equations. We reviewed some of the important properties of logarithms and how to apply them when simplifying algebraic expressions or when solving equations. We then discussed the new material concerning positive, velocity, and acceleration equations. The most challenging part was translating some of the word problems into correct equations, but the student improved quickly. He also improved on his ability to solve both equations and inequalities involving exponential and logarithmic equations that were incorporated into expressions for position, velocity, or acceleration. For the very last part of the session, we discussed the material from AP Chemistry on thermochemistry and calculating values for entropy, enthalpy and energy of a system or chemical reaction. There are a lot of different formulas involved, so we discussed ways to help select the correct formula for the specific type of problem. The student made an 80 on his pre-calculus test from last week."
"I worked with both students on separate topics. With the first one, we worked on algebra 2 and graphing polynomial functions. With the other student, we worked on dividing by polynomial functions and the steps of synthetic division."
"We went over a bit of chapter 2 in the student's book, and her homework from chapter 3.1, and we touched on logs from 3.2 I asked her to look over her chapter 2 from her test and to attempt any question she missed. I am very optimistic from this session. We talked about checking answers to make sure she is getting the homework right."
"The student needed to study for her PreCalc final on Thursday, so we worked together on her study guide. The final will be cumulative, so we were reviewing everything that she has covered so far this semester. She struggled a little bit with linear functions, but she mostly just had trouble remembering the different linear equations: point-slope form, slope-intercept form, and standard form. Once we practiced a few problems, she was clearly more comfortable finding the solutions. In total, we worked on complex numbers, linear equations, quadratic equations (graphing, factoring, and finding the solutions), radical functions, matrices, and polynomial functions. I told her that if she has a few more questions before the final, she can email me by Tuesday night for help. Our next tutoring session will not be until after the new year."
"We covered trigonometric functions and application problems in trigonometry. We worked on the student's review for his precalculus exam. He understood the subject quite well and just needed guidance with some specific problems in the review."
"We went over the student's review packet for her midterm this week. Her attitude was positive. Strategies in this session included showing her how to do the problem in different ways and asking her to solve a similar problem I created. She has the rest of her review packet to complete."
