Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We went over the student's math and physics material. For math it was a review packet and for physics it was handouts on pressure and bouyancy. "
"The student is doing well. The last section we went over is very difficult and he is understanding how to do it well since it is something that he has never done before and requires putting a lot of other concepts to use. Good session though."
"The student and I spent the session working through a practice problem set on the first-derivative test and finding relative extrema of functions. At the beginning of the problem set, he was having difficulty with determining whether each critical point was a relative maximum or minimum, but through a combination of the practice and a few different explanations, he demonstrated proficiency by the time I left for the night."
"Practical applications of using sin, cos, and tan functions, using angles of elevation and depression, and finding things like distances between objects and heights of objects. This makes a lot more sense to her than theoretical triangles did, because she can relate it to something."
"The student and I worked on chemistry today. We worked on his review sheet. It focused on Lewis dot diagrams, bond types, electronegativity, and polarity. I think we practiced enough for him to do well on his worksheet."
"The student had done all his practice work and we were able to go through and see what his scores would have been. He earned a 33 on the Math and Science sections, a 31 on the Reading and a 27 on the English. We are working on consistency with the student so he will continue doing plenty of prep work on everything. His English score seems to be inching up the more prep we do, as the last five passages he has done have averaged better than his earlier attempts. His math mistakes are largely small errors and we talked about methods he could improve there. Overall, I am positive that the student will continue to improve."
"Today, I worked with the student on both geometry & PSAT prep. She seemed to recognize a good amount of the introductory geometry material. We talked about a few of her weak spots in algebra - functions, factoring - because that previous math will inevitably give her trouble on the PSAT if we do not work on it. She seemed to handle the writing practice questions well, and told me that she found the math and reading sections much harder when she took the PSAT previously. Overall, I think the session went well and I enjoyed working with her."
"The student and I covered his homework of paragraph comprehension questions. He scored 9/15- mostly, I believe, due to vocabulary issues. He also scored 1/3 on word knowledge practice problems. We will start having weekly vocabulary quizzes."
"First, we reviewed the homework that I assigned in linear equations. The student demonstrated that she understands the material, but she needs to be careful not to use the incorrect sign (positive/negative). Then the student finished the Verbal Reasoning and Mathematical Reasoning practice tests from yesterday. We added more vocabulary words to the collection of flash cards. The student's Mathematical Reasoning score has improved dramatically, and she has surpassed her goal in that section. I assigned some homework in decimals/fractions/percents."
"The last session focused on helping the student with her algebra coursework. We went specifically into determining the solutions to multiple equations and examining, in which circumstances, the solutions are either none, one or infinite. She quickly understood the concepts and did well at completing the assigned problems."
"Integration and differentiation of trigonometric functions. went over past exams(midterms) with student. Student was able to identify trigonometric identities and solve simple to complex problems at the end of the session."
"The student and I continued working on general writing skills. Today I focused on teaching him common grammatical errors and how to avoid them. Then we worked on some SAT sentence error identification questions."
