Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Discussed family's objectives for tutoring; the student's mother feels his writing skills need support in response to his Language Arts teachers' assessment, with an emphasis on writing research papers. As familiarity with the student's writing is necessary to plan for improvement, most of this session was spent reviewing his writing samples. I compared three different samples: one that had received a low grade (with teacher comments), one that had earned high marks, and a third that fell somewhere in between. The student was receptive when we examined errors or areas for improvement. One of our goals in organization and writing will be to more closely follow a rubric and make edits based on a grader's constructive criticism."
"We reviewed what he felt about writing and how his school handles writing assignments. He is In a writing camp all day while his parents work so he writes for hours every day. He knows all the basics about writing. He did a writing sample and did great. He likes writing stories and being creative. We will work on organization and thesis statements which he has never done before."
"After the student paraphrased an article about a special white whale, I asked her to write a short story from the point of view of the whale. Her homework last week was to start thinking about how that story might be plotted. In today's session, we first brainstormed some plot ideas for the story. I explained that a story has to have a beginning, middle and end and certain actions have to take place in each section."
