Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In this session, we covered the area under curves and an introduction to the integral notation. I gave her a review of calculating the area under curves by using rectangles and the nuances of the approach. We went through two of her homework problems covering that topic: I guided her through the thematic ideas of the process and made sure that she could verbalize what every part of the equation meant and why we were doing what we were. She definitely felt much more confident with the rectangle-area method, and I think that I gave her a good understanding of why the topic was relevant both in terms of the history of math and as an introduction to integrals. I then defined what an integral was, made sure she understood the notation, and guided her through some examples that highlight the connection between the antiderivative and calculating the area under the curve. We also talked about accommodating our meeting times and began to anticipate her exam review."
"We covered more definite integrals as well as the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus and its applications. We continued doing review problems assigned for exam review as well."
"We went over the student's test review sheet which included Riemann sum and u-substitution integration. By the end of the session, he seemed to be very prepared for his exam tomorrow."
"Student R still has some issues keeping her signs straight and has some issues as to what to do when there are variables on both sides of the equation, though she is improving on both. We will work on variables on both sides of the equation and two variables next time. Student A seemed a bit better in his story writing. He was a bit more detailed and flowing in his writing from the prompt, but still has much to do. He also had some very good ideas but needs to build them out more and add substance. We will continue to work on those aspects."
"We made some excellent progress and are on track to finish next week! I think we are both looking forward to being done with these extensive assignments, as much as I do really enjoy working with this student. She did an excellent job with all of the complex algebraic formulas with their multiple variables to keep track of, and we successfully completed the conics assignment and looked over her final two."
"We started by going over some of the tougher concepts from last week's session (i.e. related rates and optimization). Then we applied it to many problems from his textbook. We spent the rest of the time going over free response questions from previous AP tests, which he was successful in doing."
