Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We worked on a few homework problems and I tried to see if he could begin to problem-solve about the information needed on any given problem in order to get an answer. He does well at physics because he can problem-solve about physical things and then apply formulas, so I am trying to get him to this same place in Geometry. I know I can teach him this but I hope we have enough time to turn his grade around."
"The student has a test tomorrow in which she wanted review. The test is going to cover surface area of prisms, cylinders, pyramids, and cones. We spent some time going through each of the types of shapes and discussing what you are actually trying to determine. Then we worked through problems to calculate the lateral areas and surface areas. At the very end, we had a couple of composite figures and we worked through how to find the surface area for these. As we went through each section, the student made a study sheet with the equations that she would need to know. She quizzed herself on them before we ended. She seemed to have a pretty good understanding of the material."
"Worked with the student on reviewing for her test on area of polygons and circles. She has a very good understanding, and just needed to go over obscure rules. On her last quiz she received a 24/23, so she is performing very well."
"For this session, the student and I spent the majority of the time previewing his upcoming geometry unit, an introduction to trigonometry. This is often a scary chapter for most, however I was pleased with how well he was grasping the material."
"During this session, new material such as finding the surface area of polyhedrons was reviewed. I believe it is appropriate to note the extent to which the student is improving in fundamentals and simple problem solving, which is necessary for geometry. Lastly, a study guide was completed for the next day's quiz, which covered surface area of prisms, cones, pyramids, and other 3D shapes. It was recommended for the student to redo most of the study guide for extra quiz preparation."
"In this session, we went over concepts and did exercises on lines, angles, and zero product property. The student is no longer confused with areas and perimeters for triangles and rectangles. He did well on solving equations. And his fluency of solving geometry problems is increasing as well. Though he is not familiar with Zero Product Property, after some practices, he was able to solve related problems. We learned to add the given information on the figure to help us understand the relationship between angles, lines, and segments. He was confused about finding clues on a given geometric figure. We will keep working on getting information and relations between variables based on the given question. He was very focused and engaged in this session. He was active in solving the problems. For next session, we will keep working on assigned homework."
