Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
" The student worked on an online practice test. He will be taking the test this coming Thursday. This was a chance for him to become familiar with the differences between the workbook practice tests and the online version of the test. I reviewed with him the need to pay careful attention to all test instructions. Writing a good essay that does not answer all the requirements will not yield a good score. We also reviewed the need to keep up a good pace while taking the test."
"The student wrote a personal narrative on her own. We reviewed it, corrected some grammar, and discussed an effective revising strategy. She also completed her context clues assignment. She scored 7/10, and she articulated why she selected her answers. At the beginning of our session, she had some trouble distinguishing synonyms from antonyms, but she seemed to improve as we reviewed the context clues assignment. She should write a revised, polished copy of her personal narrative for an upcoming session. The revised copy should contain one simile and one compound sentence per paragraph. We discussed these concepts during the review of her writing."
"This session, the student and I began by reviewing his edited essay from last week. His new examples greatly strengthened the essay. We worked to make these even more specific, rather than discussing general truths. Then, we continued to edit his essay considering reality TV. For this essay, we focused on using some additional information to support the main points and relate them back to the thesis. We also rewrote the third paragraph. Finally, we talked about a possible final paragraph which uses figurative language. We edited throughout for grammar and cohesiveness (for instance discussing the difference between "fewer" and "less," hyphenation issues, etc.). For next time, I am going to bring a worksheet outlining the seven different types of historical essays. From there, the student will choose the one he most wants to write (except cause and effect, which we already completed) and we will work on a timed essay."
