Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student had many writing assignments to do. We reflected on a book he is reading for school, looking up quotes to be used as evidence in an in-class debate he has. Then, we read and discussed Hobbes, summarizing and outlining his life and philosophy. We ended working on writing in Spanish and then choosing 7 vocab words that he will use to write a poem. Throughout these assignments we worked on making sure his handwriting was legible as well as erasing and rewriting words for neatness vs. crossing them out or writing over them."
"This session, the student and I reviewed his essay on two texts. We discussed the possibility of an introduction which presents the texts and transitions into a discussion of the main argument. The second paragraph of the essay was excellent, giving specific details from literature (The Hobbit) and history (Einstein) as well as a quote from one of the passages. We discussed replacing the third paragraph with a more specific one to avoid general examples. The fourth paragraph, presenting a counterexample, was generally strong. In terms of the conclusion, this could have been strengthened by presenting several examples. Throughout, the student should remember to avoid contractions and the second person. For next week, the student will make major edits to the first, third and fifth paragraphs of this essay and minor edits throughout based on these suggestions. Good work exploring this passage-based writing. See you next week!"
"Great session! More note-taking help, and organizing for the research paper. We made a great outline, and are even ahead of the game, having completed an assignment due next week. I hope to continue this progress, and I am very proud to work with him."
