Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We went over questions the student had about the practice SAT. Then, she completed a timed practice section of the test, and we reviewed the answers. We went over proportions having to do with area of a circle, central angle, and circumference, as well as triangle exterior angles. Also, we solved a problem using exponents and prime factorization."
"The student received his results from his December ACT. He scored a 28 cumulative (E-28, M-27, R-30, S-27, Essay-7). He is aiming to improve this score in March to 30+. He had a copy of his test, and we spent a majority of the session reviewing questions with which he had difficulty. Math: He ran out of time on the math section. He got hung up on a questions in the middle of the test and was unable to answer the last 5 questions. We reviewed different types of plots and the equations for circles and ellipses. We will also continue to work on his timing in this section and strategy for determining when to skip difficult questions. English: We reviewed all the grammar/punctuation questions that the student missed. Most dealt with commas. He also retook the first passage, and we discussed the few rhetoric based questions he struggled with. Overall, he did well with the rhetoric questions. Science: The student did well with most passages (missed 1 or 0 questions per passage), but missed 3 questions each on 2 passages. One was a comparative passage and the other was a physics passage. We reviewed both passages and talked through the comparative passage. Essay: The student did ok with his essay. The graders commented that he needed to include more details. We talked through the prompt and discussed how he can accomplish including more details. He also worked on outlining an essay from a new prompt. For extra practice this week, the student has one essay prompt, one reading passage, one English passage, and two science passages."
"Reviewed the full-length Math section that the student took last week. The student did extremely well, scoring in the 30s. In light of a few minor difficulties, we discussed some Math reference material like the equation of a circle and special right triangles. I guided the student through some timed practice with Reading passages. We tried out a couple strategies, including answering questions while reading and taking more time to find evidence. Ultimately, I decided that the student does best reading the whole passage first in about 5 minutes and then taking about 4-5 minutes to finish the questions."
