Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Student 1 did a 25-minute timed section from Practice Test 2 in the prep book SAT text; for the one section, he got a raw score of 12. For the rest of the session we picked questions that dealt with functions from later sections. I also proposed a 6-week course in ELA review for Student 2 (younger brother) to prepare for next fall at his university; we should be starting that just before school starts."
"Today we did a full run through of the test. This will test their endurance as well as identify any remaining areas we should focus on for our last session. The essay will be homework for next Sunday."
"I had him complete an entire test and he did about the same as he did in the pre-test. He did slightly worse on the English section but better on the science which make his score average out to be the same. So we spent time going over the rules. He does much better whenever we take time to look over the rules before taking the test so perhaps we can work something out where he does that before the test."
"We reviewed box and whisker plots and talked about standard deviations. We discussed how to do it long-hand using an example in order to explain the formula, and then we figured out how to make it work on the graphing calculator."
"The student and I reviewed the notes from his unit on Systems of Equations. I showed him how to solve systems using the graphing, substitution, and elimination methods. Next session, we'll have to learn the matrix solution and review the other 3 methods."
"We reviewed the student's weekly homework assignments about ancient India. He completed all of the reading and answered the questions quickly and correctly. His grades are dramatically improving from before I was tutoring him (up 3-4 complete letter grades!). He received another A on last week's homework assignments that we reviewed together."
