Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Used the outline created last week to generate a prose response to the second university prompt. We then applied some of the editing and rewording skills, cultivated in earlier sessions, to modify that essay into one that fit another university's supplement. At the session's conclusion, the student added completed essays for both universities to his application portfolio. We spent the last few minutes looking over some literature from a third university, and identifying particular things about the university that appealed to him, which will allow us to begin our response to the school's essay prompt next time."
"The student and I worked on college essays today, completing the supplements for two schools while making notes on the main essay. On the main essay, she has the potential for a good story but right now the essay is primarily about her sister and the balance has to shift back to her. I encouraged her to think in terms of what she wants the admissions committee to know about her that isn't evident in grades/test scores/recommendations, and then build the essay around that. The essay has a good core idea but needs to be overhauled so the focus is not on her sister, but on her reaction to her sister and the arc of maturation she underwent in dealing with her."
"In this session, the student and I looked at the essay she wrote. The ideas she had were good, so together we focused on the structure of the essay and the wording of her sentences. This essay was solid and pretty much done; I just helped her improve the introduction and fixed a few grammar issues. We were able to finish both of these essays, and she feels confident about them."
"The student continues to work hard and be engaged. Today, we discussed her three application essays. She plans to make revisions based on my feedback and will schedule another meeting for next week."
"This session the student and I went over how her other assignments turned out. She said everything that I helped her with came out great and she made 100's on them all. We then proceeded to go over another court case for which she had a presentation due in the next few days. We reviewed the facts of the case and then organized the content of her presentation. After that, she has another essay due where she had to analyze PEIMS data. She had taken notes and retrieved the data, but wanted my assistance putting it all together. With the remaining time, we were able to finish a draft of the paper."
"The student and I reviewed his recent additions to his thesis paper. Overall, they were very strong and just required a few word changes and transition sentences. He has two more paragraphs to write on his own, using the outline, before turning in his rough draft on the 16th."
