Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I started on his next unit, covering the first lesson on infinite and nonexistent limits. To help explain the concepts, I pointed out the connection to the lesson on limits which we covered back during the sequences and series unit. The student picked up on the new concepts quickly, although he struggled to recall the techniques used in that previous limit lesson."
"The student and I continued working on the math today, which is still a bit of a struggle for him. Though he understands the fundamental concepts well, he has a hard time putting them together to solve a problem and often makes small algebraic mistakes. He's gotten much better, however, and is now able to identify when he's put a wrong answer before I have to correct him. Tomorrow we will do a comprehensive review of everything we've covered to make sure he's prepared for the exam on Saturday."
"Yesterday the student and I had our first "real" session. We went over the first Italian unit, and it was fantastic! We did a really comprehensive study session--ranging from vocabulary, articles and the verb "essere." She mentioned that she felt weakest in spelling, so we incorporated oral and written study techniques to give her the max amount of practice. She has a good grasp of the language so far, but she can work on her details (spelling, accents, conjugations). I think she realized how helpful these meetings will be, so hopefully she will be more prone to take the scheduling seriously."
"Tips for reading comprehension and practice test. In addition, worked on poetry essay for English - theme, tone, and style. 1.5 hr session, includes .5 hr for correspondence edits to the essay on Tues Jan 31."
"The student worked about a third of an ACT math practice test and did very well. We talked about strategies on solving some of the problems. The student had to make corrections from his math review quiz involving inequalities, linear equations, probability, and quadratic equations."
"The student and I covered some Science practice and then some Math practice. I noticed that he does great when he isn't timed, so we are going to start doing timed practice, and he is going to do timed practice at home."
"The student and I worked on French vocabulary today. She picked up the vocabulary very quickly, as most of the words were cognates. I also introduced her to conditional conjugations so that she has a head start to the concept, but did not go too far into the topic. She seems to be doing very well in French so far."
"I worked with both students today with their make up work. One student was so proud in the change in her this past week. She even made a 100 on a math quiz today. When we completed her homework and corrected her work she knew what she was doing and could explain the steps to me."
"We worked on the student's 4000 word paper for his leadership class. A sizable amount of the paper required him to view a movie that his teacher had not yet shown in class. However, we outlined the entirety of the remaining sections of the paper, which he could work on now. I have asked the student to have a draft ready for review when I next see him."
"We went over the problem set for friction, with a focus on what friction means, what the force constant is, and how to check over work with units. We paid close attention to a particular lab problem that involved isolation of the friction constant to test for dependence on surface area, mass, and surface smoothness. We also worked on a long problem that involved using prior knowledge of kinematics equations and how to break them down in order to solve for the unknown."
"Since our last meeting, student finished her 3rd grade book. We continued prior work in the 4th grade book. A lot of complicated models were used to solve comparison problems, ones that involved all four operations and multiple steps. Student started to catch on after a few problems."
"The student and I worked on practice assessment test questions, and we focused on solving problems involving graphs, ratios, an probability. We also reviewed the meaning and application of scientific notation. We also worked with questions involving graphing and determining the coordinates of a point."
