Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student has an upcoming test, so I helped him to review for that, going through each chapter's vocabulary and grammar. We also practiced Latin->English and English->Latin translation. He's becoming more confident, and if he studies hard, I believe he will do well on his test."
"The student translated the story of Hercules' eighth labor. He did fantastic. His translation skills have come so far in just a short while. He understood all of the grammar and just needed small vocabulary reminders or verb tense reminders. Afterward, we did a brief overview of how to form the gerund and how it is commonly used. He translated so fluently that we had an entire extra 20 minutes which we used to translate part of a fun story about Daedalus and Icarus that contained similar grammar and vocabulary as his text."
"This student outdid himself today. We covered a lot of material, and he handled it all with hard work and attention. We started the session with a thorough review of infinitives (which included an impromptu review of the conjugations and of the five characteristics of Latin verbs). We then returned to our ongoing handling of the indirect statement, which he handled with ease. I am very proud and pleased with the progress he has made, not only in this particular (and important) point of Latin grammar, but in his command of Latin in general."
"The student's confidence with verbs gets better every session, but he is still behind on nouns. We practiced examples for the first two sections of the final exam - while he is still occasionally guessing, he is much stronger and was correct 90% of the time. When we got to the pronoun and noun sections, however, our work came to a halt. He is unfamiliar with the ends of the nouns. I recommended flash cards for both vocabulary and endings. We will pick back up next Friday with nouns and pronouns (sections 3 and 4/5 of the final exam)."
"We need to work more on vocabulary and dedicate more time on review of older skills. I will give him more noun/adjective declining exercises to work on. He is working on memorizing the first 7 lines of the Aeneid this week."
"In this final session (probably) for this school year, the student reviewed the chapter 10 vocabulary for a quiz on Tuesday. He has an excellent command of the list, both Latin to English and English to Latin. I did invite him to contact me if some need should arise. It has been a pleasure to work with him!"
