Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We switched back and forth between Reading and Writing sections on practice tests from the prep text; we were able to cover 5 sections, revising answers in between. Once again, the student has a great handle on when to cut his losses and check answers with little time left instead of starting on a new passage. We are still trying to raise his raw score by a few hundred points, so next week we will do all writing sections out of a given test, then calculate a full scaled score based on that. "
"The student and I went through chapter 5 in pieces, using the interactive quizzes to review ratios, rates, proportions, cross multiplication, customary units, similar figures, and solving similar figures."
"Practiced for her SAT I the next day. Focused especially on the English section, for which she did 2 practice tests, showing some improvement after discussion. We also went over basic essay structure. Although I am confident about her progress, I believe rigorous practice is in order to make her next SAT score (in the Fall) what she wants it to be."
"I went over the science portion of the ACT with the student today. This section is unfamiliar to her and will take some getting used to since she's been studying for the SAT. We talked about the differences between the ACT and SAT (mostly formatting of questions and timing) and discussed how to approach the essay."
"We covered personal pronouns and their various forms--direct object pronouns, indirect object pronouns, etc. I found the student to have a strong command of these already, but I made sure to review special rules and exceptions she was not familiar with. We also worked to translate and summarize the book we have been reading together, "Los Desconocidos.""
"With the student , we went over waves, harmonics, electric circuits, and series/parallel circuits. In addition, we also completed passages in the test prep book concerning these topics. Overall, she was able to solve most questions with some assistance by the conclusion of our session. I advised her to please finish the remaining passages in the prep book regarding these topics, particularly the electric circuit passages that she had trouble on."
